Statement on the Gaza War from William Morris LL.D., Secretary General of the Next Century Foundation.

The world is profoundly saddened by the resumption of the Gaza War and the consequent loss of life. The lives of the innocent are sacred and there is never any justification for collective punishment. Indeed there is rarely any justification for collateral damage whatever the provocation.

We are fully aware of Israel’s war aim of the Disarmament of Hamas and other associated militia in Gaza. There are many strategies that can achieve this aim without the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. We believe that the strongest signal that can be sent in support of a peace process based on a two state solution would be the recognition of the State of Palestine now by the two UN Security Council states in a position to easily do so, namely the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of France.

We remind Next Century Foundation members of the words of Dr Tony Klug at the conclusion of our last meeting on the Middle East Peace Process: “Despair is not a strategy”. We pray for the future of the children of Israel and the children of Palestine, that they may grow up in a world in which the most fundamental of all human rights is respected: Freedom from Fear.
