New Year’s Message – the text
[0:00] Well greetings my friends it’s another year, twenty twenty-four, and I did promise that I would record a New Year’s message. And I have failed. There’s no excuse for that but I will do it now belatedly, now that we’re around Epiphany. You know epiphany is the feast of the three wise men who visited baby Jesus. For many, it’s the end of the Christmas season, 12th Night and all of that, but I and my family keep our Christmas decorations up until Candle Mass, the second of February which is greedy, but that was the old ancient tradition.
And we keep it because we like that midwinter feast that is Christmas.
Of course, the Christ child was never born at Christmas. It’s a symbolic thing.
It’s an adoption of pagan traditions where there was a midwinter feast.
But these times, these times, we’re into the new year now. And we need to remember reasons to hope. But first, we need to remember what our ethical, and moral, responsibility is in 2024.
Standing by your principals
[1:21] Because, I tell you, we are called to stand by principle.
Now, what is principle? If my daughter was killed, would I exact retribution, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth? Well, I might.
And how far would it go? Look, here’s the thing.
It’s not a question of the number of people that die.
One child is as important as a thousand children. Now, this is an essential principle that we must understand.
You know the story of the boy and the old man on the beach. And the starfish were washed up, in their thousands, and were dying? And the little boy was picking up starfish one by one and returning them to the water and the old man said, “My darling child what’s the point you cannot make a difference they are all dying.”
[2:40] And the little boy, he said, “But it makes a difference to this one.” You understand?
Put it another way. We are all culpable for all the suffering in the world if we endorse it.
If our governments, the British government, the American government, do so and if we say it is right, it is right, it is right to kill. Because the need is there for our own protection, then we are culpable if we endorse that, as greatly as if we pulled the trigger – but if we say no. [3:26] Surely it’s wrong and we weep tears of compassion and mercy then God herself or himself, or whatever he or she is, will be grateful.
The world is a broken place, and you and I can make it better in 2024, and it is our responsibility to do so.
I was told by my beloved wife that I should write something, say something, joyous.
What is joyous? It’s joyous that there is less child poverty worldwide this year, that’s the truth. It’s joyous that I believe that ultimately the human race will deal with the climate change issue and come to its senses. And it’s joyous that we do not live in a century where World War upon World War – Gosh, I was brought up in the era of the Vietnam War, which succeeded the Korean War and so on.
War upon war was the 20th century.
It is not as bad. There is hope.
Hold onto Hope
[4:43] It is a better world. It may not seem like it, but we are moving towards it.
And hold that in your heart. The universe is becoming a better place and there is a better tomorrow.
And never lose sight of it as we move through 2024 with all its challenges.
Because hope is an obligation in a world in which there is too much negative thought.
Be hopeful, cling to hope, and make it your determination to make 2024 a joyous year, regardless.
And then you will stand and make a difference by merely thinking that way.
God bless you, and God bless this coming year.
