The Next Century Foundation stands in solidarity with the people of Morocco during this challenging time as they grapple with the devastating aftermath of the recent earthquake that struck on September 8, 2023. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and to those who are now facing the formidable challenge of rebuilding their lives.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8, has left an indelible mark on the Kingdom of Morocco, claiming the lives of at least 2,901 individuals and injuring over 5,500 others. Many have been tragically buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings and rescue operations, while valiantly ongoing, are facing diminishing hopes of finding survivors.
This catastrophe has affected more than 300,000 people, leaving them in dire need of basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, and medical care. The Moroccan government, recognising the gravity of the situation, has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions. The military has been mobilised to assist with rescue operations, while shelters have been established to accommodate those who have been displaced from their homes.
We commend the Moroccan government’s swift response to this disaster and their appeal for international assistance. We are heartened to see that international aid organisations are already providing much-needed support. However, the scale of this tragedy is overwhelming, and it is imperative that the international community comes together in a collective effort to aid Morocco in its time of need.
In the aftermath of the earthquake: Towards a better future
The earthquake not only claimed lives but also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including homes, schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges, further compounding the challenges faced by the affected communities. It is clear that the road to recovery will be long and arduous.
The Next Century Foundation pledges its commitment to supporting the recovery and rehabilitation efforts in Morocco. We call upon governments, organisations, and individuals worldwide to join in providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by this tragedy.
Our thoughts are with the people of Morocco, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this disaster. Our solidarity, compassion, and collective efforts will be in solidarity with Morocco as its people heal and rebuild a brighter and more resilient future.
We are grateful for the unwavering spirit of the Moroccan people, and we know that they will rise above this adversity as a testament to their strength and resilience.
