Helena Rowlands submitted a written statement to the 51st United Nations Human Rights Council Session regarding women’s rights in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. She calls for women’s rights in Afghanistan to be wholly respected, and their post-primary education reinstated. This, she suggests, should be done through UN and member state engagement with the de facto government of Afghanistan. This engagement should include targeted funding programs, direct engagement with and meaningful involvement of Afghan women. Finally, Helena calls for the protection of women’s remaining rights, prioritising prevention rather reaction to compromise of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
