UNHRC52 The situation in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

SHARE

Kenyatta Mirindi and Penelope Abraham, of the UK Justice Congo Group, submitted a written statement to the 52nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in conjunction with the Next Century Foundation regarding human rights violations in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

They call for the full publication and urgent implementation of the recommendations of Robert Garreton’s Mapping Report of 2009, commissioned by the United Nations, and of the 2022 UN report into war crimes, arguing that reconciliation is dependent upon justice and accountability. They call for justice for victims of rape as a weapon of war and emphasise the fundamental need to address the role of ‘conflict minerals’, as well as the intervention of Rwanda and other East African Community states, in the DRC.
