Madame President,
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s advocacy of a one state solution without equal voting rights for all Palestinians instead of the Middle East Peace Process and his rejection of any moves towards recognition of the State of Palestine after the State of Israel ends its offensive in Gaza is deeply troubling. His assertion that all territory west of the Jordan River would be under Israel’s permanent security control is wrong and undermines efforts for lasting peace. A one state solution of this kind would perpetuate the suffering and tension for the citizens of both Israel and Palestine. It would inevitably lead to a system of two classes of citizens reminiscent of an apartheid state. It would complicate international support for Israel with countries in Europe and the Middle East who have long backed the two state solution envisaged in the Oslo Agreements, no longer willing to provide long term security assurances to Israel. A two state solution is the only viable conclusion to this crisis that will create lasting peace in the region. We appeal directly to the United States of America to promote security in the region, and more effectively push for a resolution that establishes a sovereign Palestinian State. Self determination for the Palestinian people is the only way to generate security and stability for the citizens of Israel and Palestine. Thank you.
